A2A is moving to the Agentic AI Foundation

According to a report published by Axios on August 17, 2026, Agent2Agent (A2A), an open protocol originally developed by Google to enable communication between AI agents, is becoming a hosted project of the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF).

The development addresses one of the increasingly important challenges in agentic AI: enabling agents built by different companies, frameworks and technology stacks to work together without requiring a custom integration for every combination of systems.

A2A establishes a common communication layer through which agents can discover each other's capabilities, delegate tasks, exchange information and collaborate across organizational and technological boundaries.

Why does A2A matter?

As agentic AI systems become more sophisticated, enterprises are unlikely to rely on a single AI model, cloud provider or agent framework for every task.

One agent might use technology from Google, another could rely on an OpenAI model, while additional services may run on Microsoft Azure or AWS infrastructure. Without common protocols, engineering teams would have to build and maintain separate integrations between these components.

Open standards such as A2A are intended to reduce that integration burden and make agent architectures more modular and less dependent on a single vendor.

The Agentic AI Foundation says the A2A ecosystem is backed by more than 150 organizations, with production use cases emerging across cloud infrastructure, financial services, supply chains, enterprise IT and mobile platforms.

A2A versus MCP

A2A is particularly interesting when viewed alongside the Model Context Protocol (MCP).

Although both protocols contribute to interoperability in agentic systems, they address different layers of the architecture.

  • MCP standardizes how AI applications and agents connect to tools, services, applications and data sources.
  • A2A focuses on communication between independent agents, including discovering capabilities, delegating tasks and exchanging results.

A modern agentic architecture could therefore use MCP to connect an agent with databases, APIs and enterprise tools while using A2A to coordinate interactions between multiple specialized agents.

Toward a more open agent ecosystem

Moving A2A under the Agentic AI Foundation is also significant from a governance perspective. Open and neutral governance can reduce the risk that critical interoperability infrastructure becomes dependent on the product strategy of one company.

If standards such as A2A and MCP achieve broad industry adoption, businesses could gain greater flexibility in choosing AI models, cloud providers and development frameworks based on factors such as price, performance, latency and security.

The development is especially relevant to areas such as Agentic CRM. Future CRM platforms may contain separate agents for sales, customer support, marketing, customer analytics and knowledge management. Those agents may be created by different vendors or operate on different AI models.

A standardized agent-to-agent communication layer could allow these components to cooperate without forcing the entire CRM architecture onto a single vendor's ecosystem.
